Tamegroute | SUN Candleholder

€129.00

Last Feburary we had the opportunity to visit Said, our potterer in Tamegroute in the South of Morocco. At the border to the desert, he creates these astonishing candleholders among other things.

The clay is extracted just outside the town from a depth of ten meters in a palmerie. Said turns some of the candlesticks on the potter's wheel, while others are built up and dries them for about 24 hours inside his workshop. If he puts them directly in the sun, they would crack. After drying, they are fired in kilns built into the ground. Wood chips and palm fronds from the region are used as firing material. Then they are glazed with a glaze made of stone powder and different metals and fired a second time. Depending on the composition of the glaze, the pieces get their different shades – from mustard yellow to almost black.

Please note that each piece is handcrafted and colours and shapes might vary.
